Why This Matters

Conflict Can Arise in Every Direction

Conflict can arise in any workplace relationship. Left unresolved, differences in expectations, priorities and perspectives can erode trust, weaken cooperation and strain working relationships.

When Feedback Feels Personal

Performance expectations, feedback and accountability can trigger defensiveness, silence or resistance.

When Priorities Compete

Differences in priorities, ownership and resources can create friction, delay decisions and weaken cooperation.

When Concerns Travel Upward

Concerns may be withheld, softened or raised too late, leaving important issues unresolved.

When External Pressures Rise

Different interests, expectations and public-facing pressures can intensify tension with external stakeholders.

When You Receive the Criticism

Blame, denial or negative messages can trigger an automatic defensive response before the issue is heard.

When Emotion Takes Over

Anger, defensiveness or resistance can shift attention from the conflict to the reaction itself.

The Capability Gap

Managing the Conversation Is Not the Same as Resolving the Conflict

You may already know how to stay composed, listen carefully and keep a difficult discussion productive. Those skills matter, but conflict resolution asks you to work beneath positions and reactions towards what each side needs and what can happen next.

Useful Conversation Skills You May Already Use

  • Stay composed and keep the discussion professional
  • Listen carefully before responding
  • Separate the person from the problem
  • Choose words carefully
  • Look for common ground
  • Keep disagreement from escalating

What Needs-Based Conflict Resolution Adds

  • Notice your reaction before it drives your response
  • Separate what happened from what you took it to mean
  • Identify feelings and needs beneath positions
  • Receive criticism without immediate defence
  • Express concerns honestly without blame
  • Turn needs into clear requests and collaborative strategies

About This Workshop

One Structured Process for Working Through Conflict

This workshop develops a needs-based approach to workplace conflict using Nonviolent Communication. You learn to distinguish observation from evaluation, recognise feelings and underlying needs, receive difficult messages empathically, express concerns without blame and make clear requests.

Practice uses workplace and cross-agency scenarios, including hierarchical, cross-departmental and public-facing situations. You move from NVC foundations to applying the process when criticism, disagreement, resistance and competing needs enter the interaction.

  • 01Observe Without Judging — Separate what happened from what you think it means.
  • 02Recognise Feelings & Needs — Connect emotions to the underlying needs or concerns.
  • 03Understand Without Necessarily Agreeing — Listen for the concern behind another person’s words without surrendering your position.
  • 04Make Clear, Doable Requests — Express what is needed next in specific, practical terms.
